The perks of being a reader – And you don’t have to take my word for it

2012 was as ever a great year! It really was. As always, I’m excited to welcome the new year & whatever new adventures I will have in 2013. That being said, I’m closing 2012 in the best way possible, letting my mind wander & having some great adventures in the pages of some books.

First off, I read a lot of books this year. The ones I’ve most recently finished are The Magicians by Lev Grossman & The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Let me start with fantasy & work my way in to real life.

TheMagiciansHere’s a book that has everything I like, but I didn’t like it. It has magic, adventure, education, far off places. It really does have it all, including pointless sex. Yeah, not too jazzed on that. Nor was I jazzed about the main character’s, Quentin, utter lack of human emotion or growth through any of the magic or experiences he has. LAME! In the end, I was right about most of the way things got wrapped up. Conclusion, I will not be reading the second installment.

I surprised myself & finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower in just one day. That’s a major thing for me, as I am a very slow reader. I literally could not put this book down. My favorite thing about it, that while it is a work of fiction, was how honest Charlie is. He goes into detail when he feels like it & let’s the reader know why he’s not going into detail.

I also really enjoyed Patrick. He’s probably the best openly gay character I’ve ever read. Compared to the gay character, Eliot, in The Magicians, Patrick is pretty amazing. He & Eliot go on benders & do have their sexual experiences. The difference to me is that Patrick loves being himself. Eliot does not like being himself until whisked off to a for off land.

For me, it is always a good time to be  a book. I just got my account on GoodReads.com started. Check it, if you like.
